How to Measure

Six measurements, a soft tape, five minutes. That is all I need.

Before you start

  • Use a soft tailor’s tape, not a metal one.
  • Measure over a thin shirt or bare skin, never over a jacket.
  • Stand straight, breathe normally, do not pull the tape tight. Snug is right.
  • Ask someone to help with the back length and the arm length.
  • Write down centimetres, half centimetres are fine.
  • Measure your body, not a shirt. I add the ease myself, so do not add room yourself.
  1. Drawing: a tape around the base of the neck

    01Collar size

    Neck

Around the base of the neck, where the collar sits. Put one finger between tape and neck.

  2. Drawing: a tape around the chest under the arms

    02Around the armpits

    Chest

Around the fullest part of the chest, tape under the arms and flat across the back. Keep it level.

  3. Drawing: a tape around the waist at navel height

    03Around the navel

    Waist

Around the waist where the shirt sits, usually at the height of the navel. Relaxed, not pulled in.

  4. Drawing: shoulder point to wrist bone

    04Shoulder to wrist

    Arm Length

From the point of the shoulder, where the sleeve seam sits, over a slightly bent elbow down to the wrist bone.

  5. Drawing: collar seam to hem at the front

    05From collar

    Front Length

From the collar seam at the front, straight down to where the shirt should end.

  6. Drawing: collar seam to hem at the back

    06From collar

    Back Length

From the collar seam at the back, the small bump at the base of the neck, straight down to the hem.

I design every shirt and check every measurement before it goes into production. If something looks off, I write to you first.
